My Take: Captain Phillips (2013)


Captain Phillips is an action thriller about an American cargo ship that gets hijacked by Somalian pirates. The film stars Tom Hanks and American-Somalian actor Barkhad Abdi. It is directed by Paul Greengrass, who is known for making movies which re-enact real life events. It follows the story of Tom Hanks character, Captain Phillips, as he is taken hostage by the Somalian pirates. This real life event is known as the Maersk Alabama hijacking which happened in 2009. My Take: Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (2013)


This is a story many of us, especially South Africans, have heard over and over again. A story about Mandela and black South African’s journey to freedom. The film stars British actors Idris Elba and Naomie Harris who play the famous Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. It’s directed by English director Justin Chadwalk. The film is based on the 1994 book Long Walk to Freedom by the man himself, Nelson Mandela. Continue reading

My Take: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)


Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth grace the big screen again reprising their roles as Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthrone. They bring the film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second instalment of the Hunger Games trilogy, to life alongside director Francis Lawrence. In the film we watch the challenges Katniss tries to swim through after winning the 74th Hunger Games. Continue reading
