Throwback: Holy Man (1998)


‘What’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ were the three words that came to mind after watching this movie. WHAT did I just watch? WHY would someone make such a movie and HOW was it able to make it to cinema.  This movie is just a big ball of failure, from the acting to the cinematography, the story to the locations. The interesting thing about this is that the film has great people involved. Such as actors Eddie Murphy and Jeff Goldblum. It even has screenwriter Tom Schulman best known for his screenplay for Dead Poet Society which won the Best Screen Play Academy Award in 1989. How then was it able to be such a failure? My Take: Captain Phillips (2013)


Captain Phillips is an action thriller about an American cargo ship that gets hijacked by Somalian pirates. The film stars Tom Hanks and American-Somalian actor Barkhad Abdi. It is directed by Paul Greengrass, who is known for making movies which re-enact real life events. It follows the story of Tom Hanks character, Captain Phillips, as he is taken hostage by the Somalian pirates. This real life event is known as the Maersk Alabama hijacking which happened in 2009. My Take: Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (2013)


This is a story many of us, especially South Africans, have heard over and over again. A story about Mandela and black South African’s journey to freedom. The film stars British actors Idris Elba and Naomie Harris who play the famous Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. It’s directed by English director Justin Chadwalk. The film is based on the 1994 book Long Walk to Freedom by the man himself, Nelson Mandela. Continue reading
